Greene County Community Center reopens

(Snow Hill, North Carolina)–From a cement floor that held water to new carpet, a crowd of nearly 200 residents gathered to see the newly renovated Greene County Community Center at an opening and dedication service.

“Many residents have shared with me that they are absolutely thrilled with the newly renovated Community Center. This facility has served the community for nearly 35 years. However, it was in dire need of an upgrade. With the new renovation, it will not only serve as a community center, but a family center providing diverse activities for residents of different ages. I believe that this renovation will serve the community for years to come,” said Snow Hill Mayor Don Davis and candidate for the North Carolina Senate District 5.

Recently a 3,200-sq ft expansion to the Greene County Community Center was completed. Upgrades were made to the kitchen, bathrooms, and storage areas. A new conference room was added inside of this facility. The total project cost upon completion will be over $425,000.

“This project was the result of bringing together nearly 30 community partners. It is imperative that we bring residents together looking for ways to better utilize our resources and identify ways to improve quality of life within our community. Quality of life is not only important to healthy living and building stronger communities, but also strengthening our economy. This is why I would like to bring residents of Pitt, Wayne, and Greene counties together,” Davis added.

The Community Center enhancement project started in 2006. Plans remain in place to pave a parking lot, locate playground equipment on the grounds, and pave a walking trail.

“I thank Mayor Davis for his leadership. Without him, this would not have happened,” stated President Joan Atkinson of the Greene Improvement Association at the opening.

Partners in the renovation included the County of Greene, the North Carolina Division of Community Assistance, North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation, Greene Improvement Association, Greene County Training School and South Greene High School Alumni Association, Greene County NAACP, and Snow Hill Crime Watch.

The original Greene County Community Center was constructed in 1974. This was the first major renovation to this facility.
