Diverse group of supporters offer support at filing

(Snow Hill, North Carolina)–Snow Hill Mayor Don Davis officially filed for the North Carolina Senate District 5 seat today at the Greene County Board of Elections accompanied by a diverse group of strong supporters.

District 5 consists of all of Greene County, parts of Wayne County including Goldsboro, Mount Olive and Seven Springs, and portions of Pitt County including Ayden, Winterville, Farmville, Fountain and part of Greenville.

Davis is the first candidate from Greene County to run for a State office in over 50 years.

Davis has set the following priorities for the District:

* Improving early childhood, K-12, and access to higher education

* Promoting access to quality healthcare and affordable housing

* Advocating on the behalf of NC employees

* Protecting members of the US Armed Forces, veterans, and their families

* Supporting small businesses, farmers, tourism, and rural communities, while fostering regional development

* Securing funds for water, sewer, roads, and technology

* Upholding public safety and preventing gang violence

* Strengthening our mental health system and funding substance abuse services

* Protecting our environment

* Promoting an open and ethical government

Davis and his supporters believe that he can revitalize District 5 the way he has revitalized Snow Hill and offered their thoughts on the candidate.

Len Henderson of Wayne County explained his reasons for supporting Davis.

“I am supporting Don because of his youthfulness, energy and strong background on the issues that face eastern North Caroliana,” Henderson said.

Ivory Mewborn of Pitt County is also offering strong support for Davis.

“I believe he (Davis) is the most qualified and best candidate for this office based on his experience,” Mewborn explained.

Greene County resident Isolene Taylor agreed.

“I am supporting Don because of his experience and qualifications,” Taylor said.

Davis resigned earlier today from his position as chair of the First Congressional District Democratic Party.

“In accordance with the North Carolina Democratic Party’s Plan of Organization, Democrats who are opposed in an election cannot continue serving in a leadership position within the Party. As of now, there appears to be five other Democratic challengers in this race. Considering these facts, I find it most appropriate to step aside for now. I have truly enjoyed serving the Democratic Party, working with U.S. Representative G.K. Butterfield, visiting various communities within our 23 counties, and advocating on the behalf of the residents in our District. I will remain available to help in any transition,” Davis explained.

“Upon my resignation, First Vice Chair Debra Tyson, will act as the chair. She will call a meeting of the First Congressional District Democratic Party Executive Committee and at this meeting, a new chair will be appointed,” Davis continued.
