Davis announces plan to seek the NC Senate in 2008

(Snow Hill, North Carolina)–As candidates from across the state line up for the 2008 election, Snow Hill Mayor Don Davis announces his plan to seek the North Carolina Senate District 5 seat currently held by North Carolina Senator John Kerr of Wayne County.

“Residents have spoken to me about running for the North Carolina Senate. I have avoided these conversations for quite some time, but believe that this might be the best time to run. After speaking with my family and Senator Kerr about my intent, I am now preparing to launch a grassroots effort in 2008,” said Davis.

Davis has served as the mayor of Snow Hill for nearly six years. He serves on the board of directors of the North Carolina League of Municipalities representing District IV, which includes Wilson, Pitt, Greene, Lenoir, Wayne, and Johnston Counties. He also serves on the advisory panel of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation. In 2005, Governor Michael Easley appointed him to serve on the North Carolina Code Officials Qualification Board. He is the chairman of the First Congressional District Democratic Party consisting of 23 counties in eastern North Carolina including Greene, Wayne, and Pitt Counties.

Davis is a 1994 graduate of the United States Air Force Academy. He served on active duty for over eight years reaching the rank of captain. Davis holds a masters degree in administration from Central Michigan University. He also holds a masters degree in sociology and doctorate degree in education both from East Carolina University. Recently Davis was appointed to the East Carolina University Board of Visitors.

He is a part-time sociology instructor at Pitt Community College and Lenoir Community College. Davis is also a Presbyterian lay minister.

“I believe that the electorate will connect with my background, experience, and desire to serve them,” Davis stated.

“My message is simple. It is time for us to come together and take a united voice from eastern North Carolina to Raleigh. It is time for a fresh face. It is time for new ideas and approaches,” he added.

Kerr has served eight terms in the North Carolina Senate and three in the North Carolina House of Representatives. He is the co-chairman of the Finance Committee.

North Carolina Senate District 5 consists of parts of Pitt and Wayne Counties, and all of Greene County.

The filing period opens at noon on February 11, 2008.
