Basnight stumps for Davis

(Snow Hill, N.C.)-North Carolina President Pro Tem Marc Basnight made two campaign stops in District 5 in support of Don Davis for North Carolina Senate. Recently Basnight was the featured guest at a meet and greet in Wayne County and a reception honoring Davis in Greene County.

“We need Don Davis. You have an enormous opportunity to elect Don. He has the capacity to do great things for Pitt, Wayne, and Greene counties. Don has demonstrated leadership and the background that we need,” said Basnight.

Senator John Kerr, former North Carolina Majority Leader Phil Baddour, and Wilber Shirley hosted the Wayne County meet and greet, which drew about 100 residents.

“I am committed to helping struggling families make ends meet, insuring that our kids get a good education from early childhood through college, and being an advocated for affordable healthcare,” said Davis.

Although North Carolina Senator John Kerr, III a Wayne County Democrat, who announced his retirement in December 2007, was not able to attend the meet and greet, Davis recognized him for his support and service. “Senator Kerr has been very supportive. We must thank him for his leadership and service to our District. I will never be able to fill his shoes, but I am committed to doing everything possible to help make our community better,” Davis shared with an applauding crowd.

About 100 supporters also came from not only Greene County, but also neighboring Pitt County at a reception held at the Greene County Museum.

“We are working hard in Pitt County to make sure that Don gets elected,” said Johnny Rouse, chairman of the Pitt County Democratic Party. Democratic leaders of Wayne and Greene counties echoed this same sentiment.

Davis joined Basnight, other members of the North Carolina Senate Caucus, and former NC Governor Jim Hunt at an August gathering in Pitt County.

The General Election is set for November 4th. Davis will face the Republican nominee North Carolina Representative Louis Pate of Mount Olive.
