Davis wins big in second primary election
(Snow Hill, North Carolina)–After a long primary election season, Snow Hill Mayor Don Davis rose above with a resouding victory in his bid to serve the residents of Pitt, Wayne, and Greene counties in the North Carolina Senate, District 5.
“I commend Kathy for her commitment to public service. As we started on this journey months ago, there was a field of six highly qualified candidates. I am pleased to gain the support of residents from across the District. It is with great honor that I accept the nomination of the Democratic Party. I thank my supporters, all who voted, and those who supported other candidates. This is what democracy is all about,” said Davis.
Last October, Davis announced his intent to run for the North Carolina Senate. Soon thereafter, North Carolina Senator John Kerr, III, a Wayne County Democrat, announced that he would not seek reelection. At close of the filing period, the field had widened with six Democratic candidates seeking to replace Kerr.
In the May 6th Primary Election, Davis emerged with over 10,000 votes. However, he was just short of the 40% margin required to avoid a second primary election with 36% of the votes. North Carolina Education Board member Kathy Taft, obtaining the second highest votes with 24%, called for a second primary election, which was set for June 24th.
Gathering in Downtown Snow Hill, Davis’ supporters waited patiently for the election night results. Davis won in Wayne County with over 77% of the votes, in Greene County with over 74% of the votes, and placed second in Pitt County with over 40% of the votes. He won the nomination with over 63% of the votes from across the District.
“My supporters worked very hard. I desire to bring the District together. I plan to continue sharing a message of hope and addressing the issues that everyday residents are concerned about. I extend a personal invitation to join our campaign to all those desiring to make our community better,” Davis added.
Davis will face Republican Louis Pate of Wayne County in the general election set for November.
